A Nurse Practitioner can diagnose illness, injuries and disease, prescribe medication, order and interpret diagnostic tests (x-ray, ultrasound, bloodwork), perform annual physicals, complete most medical forms, administer immunizations, provide treatment, order procedures, refer clients to other professionals and specialists. They can manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, COPD and asthma. NP's have a Master's degree in primary care and family medicine. They also can provide primary health care to patients of all ages, the same way a family physician does and are licensed by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Walk-ins clinics provide medical care for people who are sick and do not have a primary care provider. It is best to call first to confirm hours and criteria for visiting. If you are severely injured or have a potentially life-threatening problem, you should always go directly to the nearest hospital emergency department.
